Expressing Disagreement in English – ESL Vocabulary

As a beginner in language learning, you will focus on how to express yourself by answering questions or asking them – as we have dealt with in the most common questions in English – that will certainly be great as you will be able to interact politely and correctly.

However; in some cases you will face certain situations where you need to express disapproval. You may disagree with your addressee in certain views or topics. That’s why in this lesson we will cover some of the most common phrases used to express disagreement in English and thus build your ESL vocabulary.

Examples Of Most Common Disapproval Phrases:

So as usual there are different questions that you use to inquire about something depending on the formality of the situation. You will be able to disagree or argue with people without offending them if you have a counter argument or different view point.

 

Formal Disagreement Expressions:

 

  • Kerry doesn’t agree with me!
  • I don’t think so.
  • No way!
  • I am afraid I don’t agree with you.
  • Sarah totally disagree with her friend!
  • I’m sorry, but I disagree on …
  • No, that’s not true.
  • Absolutely not!
  • That’s not always the case.
  • That’s not right!
  • That’s not always true.

Informal Disagreement Expressions:

  • I’m not in!
  • Are you kidding me!
  • I don’t think so.
  • I’m begging to differ.
  • No, I’d say just the opposite.
  • Not necessarily my friend.
  • Dear, that’s not always true.
  • No, I’m not so sure about that sweet Berta.
